The Pet Adoption League - Lucky:

Lucky was so pleased with his new home and family, that he wrote a letter back to the Pet Adoption League.  The truth of the the matter is we think that Lucky had some help, especially with the grammar and punctuation, but nevertheless below is what he had to say.  Lucky's letter has been edited some for length, but except for that, it's just what Lucky wrote.  I even left the text in Lucky's paw writing.

May 26, 2002

Dear Friends and hello from my new home!

I wanted to drop you a letter to let you know how great my new life is!

My first week was a little confusing and a little scary. On my first day, I was introduced to the Alpha dog, (part Dalmatian and part Bird dog) Steinway, on the school grounds 2 blocks from where I now live. He was a little rambunctious to say the least! Running in circles around me, jumping and tangling up our leashes. He wouldn’t stand still long enough for me to “meet” him, so-to-speak.

I think the kids felt sorry for me with my handicap, but I showed them only having three legs doesn’t slow me down. They had to run to keep up with me! They brought me inside and called me up the stairs. I guess they thought I couldn’t climb. HA! I showed them-no problem going up-but I have to take it slow going down!

My new cat (Maine Coon named Lit’l Bit) doesn’t seem to care for me. He’s not mean, just kind of a snob. The second day I got close enough to try to smell him and he popped me with his de-clawed paw and made it clear I stay out of his “space” (I didn’t know cats had “space”-EXCUSE ME!) Then walked off flipping his tail at me mumbling something about how “cats rule and dogs drool…” Whatever!

I have a doggy door and can go in and out whenever I want.  I love to dig! Dig holes! BIG holes! Steinway is my lookout while I lay down and dig with my good paw. Mom gets kind of stern with me and points to the holes-dad just keeps putting dirt back in the holes. Steinway and I love to play tug ’o war- with just about anything-towels, hats, rugs, you name it. He evens uses my collar as a tool. He has figured out that if he pulls hard enough on my collar when I’m standing up, he can pull me over real easy. He thinks it’s funny-personally I don’t see the humor in it but I play along to keep him amused.

I’m a chewer. Wooden statues, coffee table corners and shoes. So they introduced me to rawhide bones-man those things are GREAT! My oldest brother-owner lets me sleep with him-his bed is low to the ground and easy for me to get up on. And my youngest brother-owner wrestles with me and giggles, giggles, giggles!

Love and gratitude always,

Lucky "Gershwin" Williams

In May of 2003, Gershwin sent us another letter.  He's doing well, and here's the first paragraph.

It's me! Lucky "G"!  Long time - no speak!

Can you guys believe it has been a year this month since the Williams' adopted me?  What a 'lucky" break for me-AND them! (no pun intended)  My life is still wonderful.  Steinway and I get along great!  As one of the pictures shows, I have learned how to out-smart him so he doesn't tip me over any more.  [See picture titled "Wrestling Match"; the technique is to grab Steinway's collar and hang on.]
